SO i havent posted anything in a long while now. I guess its cause I have been so 'busy' and recently i have been morning the partial death of my camera. AHHHHHH its broken. How will i survive without it! nooooooooooooooooooo ......... goodbye to sxc photos?

Its just really stupid of me I put it in my pocket and i had my bank card in there and somehow the banck card slid into the lense flao and screwed up some springs i guess. now the lense cover doesnt slide done all the way and the camera doesnt turn it on. I blame sony for the crap design!

You remeber all those SWOT analysis we did at uni, and splitting up in groups to analyse the weaknesses and strenghts opprtunities and threat, at various recruiting events?? well lte me tell you the real business world operates exactly the same way, just with a lot more luxuary and action. Ahhh my hotel room was just sweet, almost the size of my own room+ my living room combined together. Great food, fantastic sea view and some hard core strategic thinking. Ha ha

Here is something that I found in my room.

Looking back I would say this has been probably the most exciting and rewarding year! I have done so much which I would never have imagined, student societies, exchnage program, 2 internships, photography and lost of corporate bullshit. Must admit its been a pretty tiring year.

I think I am goona go try and sleep it off a bit.

Craving

Ah I have such a bad craving for chocolate right now. In any tyoe or form i would kill to have some. Havet had Lindt in ages. I have comed all the cupboards in the house but no trace of any chocolate. I am reduced to having a hot chocolate but then there is no milk!!!!!! arggghhhhhhh frustration.
The word chocolate actually mean 'bitter water'. Aztech, original pioneers of chocolate, related it to the goddess of fertility. For most of its history, chocolate has mainly been consumed in a drink form. There is a new Baileys's falvour and guess what its also chocolate. I have heard that its a limited edition so should really try it before it becomes vintage drink.
Hmm i should reallu stop talking about this as its only deepening my craving. Few updates, little manahil is doing good and she looks soo cuteeee. Work is also going good, CEO is retiring. Had a part on friday, it was fun got to meet some more people. I told some collegues that its my birthday on thursday and the whole nihgt they were dropping hints that they are expecting cakes around the office. Havent had much time to work on thesis is week and I seem to be behind my schedule. Should have done soemthing on the weekend but I am really not in the mood.
Goona go scaveng for something sweet to eat now.

23

Watched this movie today called the number 23. A bit of a freaky movie. Its about the obscession with the number 23 which drives the people almost crazy. They see it everywhere, in names, number plates, dates, events everything, until they cannot escape it and resort to suicide. The guy (Jim Carey) get into it throuhg a book that his wife buys for him on his birthday. Its a chain of events which lead from one another. I wont discuss it al incase any of you are goona watch it. Its a good movie should definately see it. Some interesting facts

- The blood takes 23 seconds for one circulation through the body
- Humans have 46 chormosomes and the baby gets 23 from each parent
- The earth revolves around its axis on 23 degreees. When they found out that it is actually 23.5, fanatics claimed that is mearly a number derived from 2+3 hence 23 again
- The Hiroshima bomb was dropped at 8:15 which makes 8+15 = 23
- Charles Darwin's Origin of Species was published in 1859 : 1+8+5+9 = 23. Two divided by three makes 0.666 recurring ... number of the devil
- Nash the noble proze winner and the father of the nash equilibrium theory was obscessed wit hthe number. he publishes 23 papers
- The terrorist attack of september 11 2001 : 9+11+2+0+0+1 = 23
- In the bible the first 23 verses of the first chapter of Genesis talk about act of creation while the 23rd chapter talks about death.
- The most detailed accounts of Julius ceaser's death tell that he was stabbed 23 times
- W is the 23rd letter of the Latin alphabet. It has two points down and three points up.
- Titanic sank on 4/15/1912 which means 4+1+5+1+9+1+2=23
- December 23, 2012 is the day the classic Mayans said the world would end.
- In Islam, the Quran was revealed in a total of 23 years to Muhammad.
- In the religion of Discordianism, 23 is considered a holy number
-

And most of my friends and I were born in the year 1985 which is 1+9+8+5 = 23!!!! creepy
So is this just selective thinking or really a natural mystery? There are other rations adn numebrs in the world which hold a mustical and facinating powers. for example the golden ratio ( which deserves a blog post of its own) Laterzz

Too innocent

So while I am waiting for my ipod to regain some life i thoguht I would post a entry. Been 2-3 days since i wrote and in the mean while i have had my first ever hedge fund meeting. I just listened and made notes. Good to know there are some nice people in the industry not all assholes and arogant bastards. One of the guys was a former Morgan Stanley person and when I introduced myself he went ohh I have worked with another Irum before. had a bit of a chit chat on if the name is common or not etc. I made extensive notes as I had no idea what i woudl be writing in the proposal later on. In the mean while I made the follwing observations while trying to graspe all the was happening during the meeting

- 2/3 people were wearign funny ties, one with dogs and anotehr one with a wierd distrating flowery pattern
- 3/3 guys were married as they were all wearing rings
- 1/3 guys had very funny cuflinks. ducks. yellow with red beaks

Also been working on my table soccoer skills, i still suck though, perfroamnce has gone down from 4 goals in the first game to 3 goals in the second. we still won though. I am just crap at defense.
After badgering my mentor for a week he finally gave me a tour of the place so i met everyone. N0 more awkward smiles inthe elevator now caus i know pretty much who is who. There was a haring party today after work at the office. I didnt ofcourse try it but went along just for a drink. It was pretty nice. Also had an intern lunch/lecture during the week it was pretty interestign. this professor dude from TU delft came to give an informal lecture on antartica. It was more related to geology but it was interesting caus he went through all the pictures of his 'holiday' trip to Antarctica and gave some pretty cool information abotu the region and the journey itself. If you are ever stranded in antarctica look for a red cabin. apparently they have set them up everywhere as first aid survival cabins so if you get lost you can take shelter there and wire an sos. Good geography lesson. The guy was funny so he didnt bore at all. he kept talking and talking and a one hour lunch turned into 2 hours.

Right now i just got back from a night of Villager/Mafia and a bit of karoke. It was a lott of fun apparently I 'look too innocent to be maffia' All four times i was the villager, I woudl ahve loved to be the mafia and see how good i will be then. well we made the game more interesting by intoducing a doctor and two lovers. its all too much to explain so i wont bother. Biking back home on a borrowed bike was refreshing and now i feel perfectly awake. Well i am goona give sleeping a try.

Hmm i cant play anything off the ipod while its recharging... thats stupid.

Some monkey business

So who is up for some monkey business.... apparently little manahil is. check out her cute monkey poses lazying around 1) monkey resting on a tree branch 2) monkey resting in the travel nest. Pay close attetion to the intricate details on the placement 0f her cheeks and curling of the arm and hand in the second picture. But do not be fooled, this monkey is very active and cheeky when awake, as I witnessed today.

Tu ru Tu tu Turm Tu ru rum Tu ru rum

Did I not tell you that I will find that song! even if i have to go though hell, travel all seven skies, go through the blistering molten lava in the middel of the earth... I will find that song!!! Fianlly I have succeeded! tu ru tu ru tu ru ru Here it issssss. listen away and remeber Koningendag 2007!

Hello

YAY finally back in conatct with my best friend from school after having no correspondence for almost 3 years now. So nice to hear from her again! now waiting for a pic of her. so kesh if you are reading i get your ass in motion and send me a piccc pleaseeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. i beg you pleaseeeeeeeeeeee. and I never got those sixth form end of the year ball pics from your either. i dont have any pics of that time aprat from those at the pier.

Have a bit of a headache. One of the most difficut things to do in life is to get out of bed in the moring! just cant hack it. Any pointers anyone? I am soo happy i am not the only slow eater at work. I remeber my last internship, during lunch times i was alwasy the last one still eating and i felt so self conscious caus eveyone was waiting for me to finish. Now I am the averge pace eater. hehehe or maybe everyone is more chilled here. Oh we played table football just before finishing work. it was the youjg against the old. The young lost ofcourse caus i was on the team and I SUCK! Thought i did score 4 goals which is so super uber cool ( using gises newfound terminology) for a first time player!

I am contemplating some travel plans ( again gise's influence) I am thinking maybe after I finish work I got to the states and see me angel niece. And then find a job save up for a bit and go to south africa? not too sure but would be cool to see my friend. this is a very distant future plan caus i am curretly broke beyond limit and have quite some 'debt' on my credit card. gise you interest in SA? can i reseve you? I take no responsibility caus these are all castels in the air, there is no guarantee of them materialising...... have a think. Miss CHRISTINA you interested?I know the answer to this without even asking!

I am realising i am so shit at writing. the whole post most probably makes zero sense! anyhow i am off to watch america's next top model, full of bitching and packed with drama!

Kijkduin

Just got back from Kijkduin, went to check out the new sculptures. Some really nice ones and some which just didnt catch my fancy. The one that I liked the most was " Maternita" it portrayed the concept is a very nice and simple way. reminded me of picasso a bit. Though i dont like Picasso, I quite liked this sculpture. The two heart in the middle set againt the blue sky and the baby in the womb, eptimoising the family concept. The "walking eggs" were pretty funny but i couldnt really grasp the idea behind them. The second sculpture that caugh the eye was that of a starved child. it was made from bonze but the artist used these realistic looking eyes. The child portrayed a very captivatig and chilling expression, and i think it was quite a strong piece. Here are some pictures:

The weather was pretty nice so i sat there listen to the live indeginous indian music and enjoyed my soft ijs. There was a large crowd listening t othe music but towards to end of the day the police came and everyone seemed to scatter away. I think the ppl were playing music without a permission from the authortities. Eveyone seemed to be enjoying the music so i dont see what the problem was.

Happy dreams

Babys only develop laughter after around 3 weeks. Before that all smiles are just movement of muscles which they are not even aware of . Here is little manahil having some sweeet dreams. However, she is very capable of expressing when she is irritated and mad. you can see little bumps forming at the begining of the invisible eyebrows and narrowing of eyes... she looks soo cute when trying to show that she is irritated. Yesterday was her first day outside the walls of the house and i think she spent most of it sleeping in her staller. Will get the updates on that soon. Also waiting for lifesize casts of her hand and feet. How typical the casting kit only had instruction in spanish!
I started the Time Traveler's Wife by Audrey Niffeneger, last night. Lets see how long it will take me to finish this one. Cell took around 4-5 months. I am not the fastest reader.

Shes awake

googley eyes are finally open! hmmm where are her eyebrows???

I have been working on my proposal for the past 5 days so i wa starting to get a bit tired of it. So pestered my mentor to give me some other work to do. Got to read some legal papers and lawsuit documents. Very interesting stuff as as its a pretty high profile case in the hedge fund industry. I was surprised on my legal undersatandng of all that stuff, it read more like an amusing story then anything else. or maybe i was so bored from my thesis that anyting sounded nice. Gonna attend a pitch on wednesday, wohooo , really looking forward to it, hopefully my input will be counted in the decisions. but before that i am goona realxxxxx for the weekend! Anyone up for doing something? Miss Christina i got 6 c1000 zegels for you.

You know when you are reading a book for a longgg time that you get so used to it that it feels like a part of you. Now that my Cell by stephen king is finished i feel a bit lonely ( haha) i was reading something today and the word 'pulse' came up which scared the shit out of me caus my mind directly went back to the story and i could imagine the world going crazy caus of cell phone pulses. To be honets the ending wasnt as satisfying as I expected. the story just eneded without a propper ending. I can extrapolate what would happen but still its nice to read it at the end rather than just thinking it!

Need another book now. Any suggestions? ( not boeing vs airbus please. i laways forget which one is american)

Intern drink

Longggg day and i am poofed! I joined the Shell Intern/Student comminity and today went to the intern drink. It was fun got to meet some other interns and a mish mash of some random intens around the hague. Met this BUZA girl she seemed nice for the first 10 minuets but as the evening progressed I kinda didnt like her anymore... she was just... dont know how to explain. well shell interns community is very male dominated but still had a good time. Met this other Italian intern she was pretty cool.

I am too tired to write about the other events will update soon. Off to bed now Havent seen manahil today and received no new pics of her today either :(

Finally

YAY i just saw little manahil via web cam! finally i can sleep peacefully. shess sooo cutle little and compact! oh the mittens are so she doesnt scratch her face. in the 2 minutes when the mittens were removed so i could see her sweet little hands she already started moving her hands to her face. shoooo cuteeee I think there shouuld be a special word in the dictionary to describe her!

Never enough

Well you should have realised by now that since i am an aunt most of my posts will be realted to my cutel litle niece! I have yet to hear her voice or whatever sounds baby make or see her live. so still making do with pictures. At the moment she is alseep. she seems to have developed the habbit of sleeping in the day and craying at night and the parents ofcourse are not happy about it, But well thats what happens you gotta sacrifice your sleep for the baby.

Why is that she seems so much smaller now then the pics of the day she was born? one explanation could be that those pic were taken zoomed in. I seems to have no moeny yet I have spent a lot on sending presents for the little one. Credit cards are evil! Well what can i do shes sooo sweet. Hopefully my new present will arrove soon and the parents can make mold prints of feet and hands. will post the pics of that as soon as i get them. Here is a 3 day old Manahil.

Hmm i realise i have yet to post a pic of manahil with open eyes but again newborns sleep around 18 hours a day! in two to three hour increments. sicne she is only 3 days old thats normal. Well in this picc she is waking up so maybe next one she will be awake.. hehehehhe check out the pink mittens... gotta get me some of those but how will you put the second mitten on yourself? hmm something to ponder.

Little Manahil

Here are some more pics of 2 days old Manahil. Awww i just wanna fly there and hold her tinny little hands cuteeeeeeeeeeee. These pictures were specially take for me as at this point in time she is looking liek me when i was born.... hmmm she doent look liek me at all. Lets see who she will look like tommorow

Another day

Second day of work. Went quite well I think, didnt manage to get that much done as the there is so much confusing stuff. My mentor had to call their legal advisor all the way in boston to ask about close end hedge funds. why are these entities so mysterious? So i spent most of my day sorting out and trying to understadn data. Attended a department meeting this morning which was interesting, got to know a bit about what goes on in asset management. I quite like the field so I am contemplating a career in it, first i thought it woudl be a bunch of old geezers investing big bucks but since my intenrhsip i have realised there are are quite a lot of young ppl there, which is cool......

More 'fan mail' they are using my cotton picture as part of a poster for a project to upgrade the cotton industry in West Africa, specifically in Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger and Benin. Sweettt! She sent me a in progress pdf version and said when they print it they will post me a copy. Cool

First day of work

Well so there was no reason for the freak oout session yesterday. Totally forgot that the first day is all about administrative stuff. So I staretd off my day by saying hello some of my collegues I will be working up. My mentor was off today so I will get an official 'tour' of the office and an official hello hi intro to eveyone on the two floors, on Monday.

It was a friday so not many people were in the office just got to meet 3 of the people in my area. My first question was ' is it casual friday?' they looked at me and laughed and explained that you ca wear anything casual/smart. Its a sesonal thing when theres a lot of activity hapening meeting with clients etc then they are all in suits but at this time its all chilled. I met with the CIO and he was dressed pretty casual as well. It seems like a nice place with some nice people. I am sitting opposite an Italian guy who is pretty funny and active thought he is leaving at the end of the month. The Dutch guy on the opposite side is also nice but a bit on the arrogant side he thinks liek he knows everything.

So after seeing my table and talkign to a few ppl I had to sit and wait for the Most Imporant person: The IT Guy who would come and sort out my computer give me login details etc. And as alwasy important people arrive late so i didnt have much to do and was given some books on hedgefunds which i kinds skimmed though unti lthe IT guy arrived got my compuetr working gave me an email address and set up the whole signature thing. there was a bit of discussio nregarding my job title and in the end it was decided that I am an Alternative Investment Intern. got my phone line set up. apparently you have to log in and out of the phone too!! Then I had to sit and do this one and a half hour IT security bullshit training. In the mean while filled out some forms for my access pass to the building and the office. Time went by quickly and it was lunch time so my collegues took my out for lunch as it was a nice sunny day. after lunch i had to sort out my card for which I had to go to the other office and get a picture taken and get it made. My shoes were killing me so i decided to take the tram instead of walking for 15 minutes. As i arrived in the other office there was confusion as the fornt desk hadn't been informed that I was coming! so they looked busy shuffelling through electronic informaton to see why i was there. Finally the woman escorted me in and I got my pass made. She gave me a little tour of the building, definately a nice place and I woudl have preffered to work in the bigger office but alas!

When I got back to my office i was so dead tired from the heat and from my shoes and my ass was hurting from squash yesterday. I just sulked in my chair and was falling asleep. Just talked to the guys for a while and read though a memo for a deal and cheked out the database. Time to leave and ofcourse the pass wasnt actrivated so I couldnt get out of the office! Anyway I made it out and went for a drive with P.

Finally I am home and checking my 'fan mail' Its soo cool this design agency is gonna use one of my pics for an annual report. the guy sent me a rough version of the design, he was surprised that i live in holllad caus on my profil says Islamabad Pakistan. heheh well heres the pics in action.

Freakign out

This is an official announcement that I am freakkkinnggggg out about tommorow. Dont understadn why am i so stressed. I should relax it will be ok. Its not the first time I am goona be in the corporate world. Though I can see two reason for my freaking out 1) the whole SHELL status is kinda scary? I feel i might be up to 'their standard' they will demand stuff form me which I will have no clue about. Second and probably the most important reason for being nervous is being behind on what they wanted me to do so far, i got no proposal not even a rough draft. They probabaly think i am stupid or soemthin caus i sent my reasearh idea on two pages and consused closed-end and closed hedge funds. Now i am am really confuseda out what it is I am doing what i wanted to do and is feasable. Must get a move on.

Well to shed the nervous vein i went shopping and bought a belt, a vital accessary as the circumference of my tummy seems to fluctuate so randomly that half of the trousers are either too tight or sag to low. Bought a bag which can accommodate a A4 size note pad, reading material for the tram travels, pen, agenda, wallet, phone, water bottle, Baquero's thesis, few loose papers and bits and bobs. Also bought a black blouse and a green shirt. I have realised my whole wardwrobe is too plain, need to update it with some sort of prints but at this point in time I do not have the funds to do so.

Also paid a visit to AH to buy some sustainenece. I will write out my shopping list caus if you are reading my blog you must already be pretty bored. Bread, Butter, Eggs, Bapao and hmmm cant seem to remeber.

Also had the crazy notion of playing squash today. Not a good idea to do sports if you are totallu out of shape and are going to work for the first time the day after. Experiencing neck/ sholder/ back pains. Had a lot of fun but i was so tiredd by the end of it I was falling asleep.

Apart from today the week's highlights include visiting Utrecht and Gouda. I have a feeling i have already written abotu this but maybe not in the blog. Both cities were completely empty either due to the dismal weather or because it was a weekday. Had a super waffel in gouda and it was lekkkerrr beyond limit. I made a video of the guy making the waffell fresh from raw ingredients. It was a small shop and the queue to buy the super waffell was prettyyy long ( which demonstrates that it was good waffelll place). Gave some apparently poor advice to someone regarding a greeting card for his mum, I personaly belive it was a harmless humour but others beg to differ. it was a M.I.L.K card. how can someone find it rude????? Anyhow, I am still hunting for a bike, went to see one the other day and it looked blatently stolen, and not that nice so I passed on that one. Have a few leads from friends but still need to check them out.

P.S can someone tell me how to post a video on the blog from the computer then i will post the stroop waffel video. I know how to do it if the video is alreay on a website like You tube.

For now on youjust ahve to do with a picture ofGouda

Bah

I am fuming at the ENECO Bill so emotions are not running high in posting a good entry! If you want to avoid having a hugggeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee Masssiiiveeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee
Giganticccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccccc
enerygy bill then Romania, Norway England and Greece seem to be most favourable countires where there is at least some cost sharing among the producer and consumer. Why am I not surprised that the consumer has to pay 100% of the cost in Holland. On the other hand if you want to avoid an electricity bill all together think of joining the Amish.

Exam Over though stress still remains

Been a couple of days since my last post. Exams are over but I will most probably be resitiing caus i did not exactly that good. Extremely easy and doable exam but I JUST COULDNT DO IT. so shove it to that stupid nike slogan "Just do it" or is it addidas, I am not quite sure I am not a sporty person so dont wear sport brands..

Anyhow a lot of stress reamins about what is it goona be like next week at work? will i like the ppl? do they expect too much from me? am i gonna be the only girl in the whole appartment? what about the thesis? is this all a good idea? i guess I should stop thinking about all this rubbish and follow one persons wise advice "DONT WORRY, BE HAPPY"

I think i have had the most fun this month. its been crazy. dont think i have ever partied this much before. and i am pretty surprised how relaxed i was about exams and uni and I think they all went well. So theres no point in stressing, one should realx and let things take their course. Let go and enjoy the days, the realtionships and friendships while you gone, caus when they are gonna you will look back and regret that you missed out on so much. When I look back now I think there is so much I could have done in the first two years, so manyy missed opportunties. But I feel quite satisfied with the last year of bachelor and the master. I have done pretty much what I wanted, joined STAR which was an experience of its own, Internships, Exchnage, partying, meeting new ppl, trying new things........ new hobbies. But then, it all has to end sooner or later and now that the time. Can't believe in a couple of months I will be finished with University for the rest of my life.... the tought will take while to truly register in my mind. Friendship is one thing that I will cherish the most from my university life......

In the memory.....my bike

I dedicate this post to the memories of my bike which recently fell victim and added to the statistics of the number of bikes stolen in holland. It had been my companion for three years nnow adn saw me thrtough thick and think, throguh sunshine and rain, through prosperity and sickness. A lot of memories of Holland were associated with the bike. I am not as much sad about the loss in the financial sense but more in a sentimetal and attachment sense. Now when I look out of the window I observe an empty lamp post... which make my heart feel empty too ( ok a bit over dramatic but you get the point)

Memories.....of a Hero

Before the recent media/political attention on global warming and the advent of BSM there was one hero who was teaching the kids about the dangers of pollution, global warming, over farming, deforistation, and eveyrhting the man kind is doing to destroy the mother nature. The hero was Captin planet: an environmental focused cartoon that occupied most of my mid-afternoons of summer vacations. Forced to stay inside, to protect ourselves for them sizzling hot sun of the typical Pakistani warm summer days, we spent most of out time by engaging in any of the following activites in order of preferences
  • Trying to sneak out ( occupied around 70% of the time) but alas, a child can never sneak past throgh the sharp motherly eye!
  • Fighting ( occupied 5 % of the time. There is not fun if there are no fights between sibblings, and i dont just mean verbal fight, i am refering to full on hand blows, pulling hair, biting, punchingm scratching or anything you can think of! i know sounds grusome but believe me it nice ot think back of your child and think of the fights.
  • Watching cartoons ( occupied 20% of the time. after all they brain wrecking on coming up with strategies to sneak out , and the exhausting fights there is nothing more relaxing then sitting back in front of the tv and watching cartoons. Not just cartoons but also Sesamestreet. The most memorables cartoons are ofcourse Captin planet, Ninja Turtles, Thundercats, Pink Panther, Smurfs, Tom and Jerry..... and the list is never ending)
  • Sleep ( 5% of the time, that was the last resort)
I would like to point out that this list differed substantially, when we were united with other sousins and friends in holidays, where most of the time wa spent on scheming and doing stupid stuff which was bound to get us into trouble. This is the fun in having big families.
So lets get back to captin planet. I will just outline the main concept behind it. Gaia represent the spirit of the earth who is awoke from a long sleep by the human activities destroying the planet. To combat the destruction, she creates 5 maigic rings to control the elements of nature. she sends these rings to five diffrent people ( Planetters) across the globe, who have the task of now defending the earth. Gaia uses her Planet Vision to discover where the most devastating destruction is occurring and sends the planeteers to help solve the problem. The Planeteers use transportation based on soler power in order to avoid causing pollution themselves. ( how cool is that! they dont just talk the talk but they walk the walk) In situations that the Planeteers cannot handle on their own, they can combine and magnify their powers to summon captin planet, who possesses all of their powers magnified, symbolizing that the combined efforts of a team are stronger than its individual parts.

Wow who would have thought that taking about global warming anf pollution will dig up all this nostalgic stuff. So here is the theme song of Captin planet. ofcourse the lyrics are attached so sing along. And THE POWER IS YOURS! ( to change your ways and try and make a small difference)

Earth!
Fire!
Wind!
Water!
Heart!

GO PLANET!

With your powers combined I am Captain Planet!

Captain Planet, he's our hero,
Gonna take pollution down to zero,
He's our powers magnified,
And he's fighting on the planet side

Captain Planet, he's our hero,
Gonna take pollution down to zero,
Gonna help him put us under,
Bad guys who like to loot and plunder

"You'll pay for this Captain Planet!"

We're the planeteers,
You can be one too!
'Cause saving our planet is the thing to do,
Looting and polluting is not the way,
Hear what Captain Planet has to say:

"THE POWER IS YOURS!!"

Btw the song is written by Phil Collins :)

Went to the beach to check out the sand sculpture competition. To be honest, it was a bit disappointing thought the one in the picture above was amazing! Love the typical esherian concept, a cow lo0king in a mirror which is looking on to itself in another mirror so you see infinite number of cows looking into a mirror .Another sculpture tries to portray the mobius strip but not successfully. A mobius strip is a truly amazing strip with one side. here is a proper use of wiki

"The Möbius strip or Möbius band is a surface with only one side and only one boundary component. It has the mathematical property of being non-orientable. It is also a ruled surface."

"The Möbius strip has several curious properties

A model of a Möbius strip can be constructed by joining the ends of a strip of paper with a single half-twist. A line drawn starting from the seam down the middle will meet back at the seam but at the "other side". If continued the line will meet the starting point and will be double the length of the original strip of paper. This single contiguous curve demonstrates that the Möbius strip has only one boundary.
If the strip is cut along the above line, instead of getting two separate strips, it becomes one long strip with two full twists in it, which is not a Möbius strip. This happens because the original strip only has one edge which is twice as long as the original strip of paper. Cutting creates a second independent edge, half of which was on each side of the knife or scissors. Cutting this new, longer, strip down the middle creates two strips wound around each other."

MC Escher depicted this concept in his famous litograoph where you see red ants walking on a mobius strip, for an indefinate period of time. The endless ring shaped band has usually two distinct surfaces, take for example one of the cancer bands that most of the ppl wear, you can pait the inside and the outside with two different colours of paint. However on the mobius strip nine red deadly ants crawl one after the other traveling both the foront adn reverse side of the strip. Therefore the strip only has one surface and you cannot paint the front and reverse in two differentr colours of paind AS theres only one surface.

Here is a video I found which shows how to make a mobius strip and it also demonestratees the characteristics of the mobius stip ( incase my explanation is not good).

No Magic At All: Mobius Strip - The best video clips are right here

A mobius strip is not jsuts a mathematical phonemonen but it has also been used in practice. Giant mobius strips have been used as conveyor belts since "each side" gets the same amount of wear. Another application involves the continuous-loop recording tapes (to double the playing time).
Escher has used the mobius strip in a variety of his lithographs. I wont put them all here as it will take forever. They are worth the time so I advise eveyone to go see them at the M.C.Escher museum in The hague.

Hunger: The most shameful issue faced by humanity in this ages and era

The next time you sit down to indulge the warm meal prepared with love, tenderness and warmth with aromas tinglying the nostrils and neurons firing away making your mouth water, Please take a moment and think of the 18,000 childeren who die every single DAY due to hunger and malnutrition. Think of those mothers who put a pot on the stove with pebbles inside, just to pacify those hungry eyes.

The world procudes enough food to sustain the 6.5 billion people in the world. Yet 850 million people go to bed every night with empty stomachs, 11 million children die before their fifth birthday every year and a child dies every 5 seconds due to hunger related circumstances.

This situation is a stark embaracement for the human kind considering the obesity statistics around the world where 22 million of the world's children under 5 are overweight or obese, Nearly one-third of U.S. adults are obese and obesity is associated with about 112,000 excess deaths per year in the U.S. population relative to healthy weight individuals. The total costs realted to obesity in US alone is $117 billion per year!

This involves both direct and indirect costs. Direct health care costs refer to preventive, diagnostic, and treatment services such as physician visits, medications, and hospital and nursing home care. Indirect costs are the value of wages lost by people unable to work because of illness or disability, as well as the value of future earnings lost by premature death

So what can you do to diminish the imbalance in the food distribution around the world. Participate in the organised events, creat awareness about the issue, talk to friend, and only talking will not help : TAKE ACTION! be it as small as donating money.

Today the World Food Program organised Fight Hunger: Walk the World. "..is a global fundraising and awareness event that takes place every year in all times zones with one sole purpose - to call for an end to child hunger.Today the World Food Progamme and its many partners are taking to the streets to make a global statement: children should not die of hunger in a world where there is enough food for them all to eat. In many parts of the world today is Mother's Day. If you’re celebrating Mother’s Day today spare a thought for the many mothers who lose their children to hunger every day"

In Rotterdam 2500 people walked despite the poor weather conditions and the fear pf rain. The proceedes from the events went towards feeding the children in Africa. If you missed the event here is your opportunity to take the firts step of making a difference:

and Donate
Your donation of Euro 25 can sustain a child for a whole year

Milestone

I am proud to make this special entry regarding the 100,000 download milestone for my sxc photos! Wohoo. It all started last summer, equopped with my new camera i decided to attack the boredom and forayed into the art of photography. I remeber the very firts photos i took were of henna on my hands and some summer flower bushes outside the university. Later my brother intorduced my to photoshop and I spent pretty much the whole summer taking and editing pictures of various subjects.

Now its been almost a year and I can say that I have learnt quite a lot from it, apart from being a relaxing hobby it has been very rewarding. Especially when you get requests whether your pictures can be used a book covers, in leaflets, as postcards, for backgrounds, blogs etc.

I guess i've always had interest in more 'creative' activities. The first ever painting/ drawing I remebr was that of a steam boat. I was around 6-7 years old and with the help of my brother I painted a red stream boat with grey smoke comign out of it and dirtying the light blue sky. And ofcourse very comical dark blue wiggly lines representing the unstable sea. The painting was a thank you gift for my younger brother's doctor. The next time I visited the hospital I was ecstatic to see my paiting in the 'common room' wall. Lets not go down the memeory lane as it will only invoke melancholic thoughts.

So to celebrate this milestone, here's a slide show of some of the pohotos ( which has obviously crashed, after having spent 3 hours on uploading the pics to it! technology! dont laugh)

Pinball

While lying in bed reading the magazine and tying to go to the land of sleep and dreams, a thought came to my mind ' I haven't made an entry i my bolog for almost a week now'. My mind is like a pinball machine: when a glistening shiny silver metal ball is catapulted in some invisible arms bounce it around to each and every corner of the mind, bruising the soft pink pulp of my brain until i descide to act on the thought and make the ball fall throught the gap between the arms and so that the lights on the top of the pinball machine flash the 'game over' sign.

Here I am trying to put my mind to rest. I belive that ther is a positive correlation between the amount of 'bordem' and the lenght of blog entry. Now there might be some mediating factors like avalibility of time, tiredess etc which could effect the realtionship. However this is not the case at this pont in time. I am simply posting to ease my mind which has been itching to put the thoughts into words and give a reflection of some recent antics:

walking throght the streets of venice, sigtseeing in Bergamo, climbing the Duamo in Milan, breathing in the mountin air in Veza, killing time in the trains by pulling faces and being scared shitlesss of a 2 month old kitten! Here is a pictrure to set the mood.

I make the entry blue which represents calmness and scerenity. I dont belive I am calm now, lost metal balls bouncing around.

Koninginnedag '07

I am too exhausted to post a blog entry. The picture describes it all, the fun, the sun, the friends, the dancing, the celebration, the walking, and the long journey back home.

All well worth it.

3.14159265

Finally at least one of the assignemnt for Warwick is finished. one down one more to go. Never realised how much i dislike economics, especially industrial economics. Some sadist professors like the idea of seeing the students squirm infront of them, asking for clues and directions on how to solve some supid fucking eco question about maximaxing this and that, looking for a single nod or facial movement inorder to gather some sense of wether you are on the right path or not.

Wonder what is happening to my TIMES subscrition, I seem to have stopped receiving the magazine so appologies for the lack of reports of useless statistics or facts. However, I did read about this one intersting topic yesterday. Pi, a number which has facinated mathematicians and non mathematiciaon alike, for centuries. Math lovers even have a day on which they celebrate the number ( 14th March). So far 1.2411 trillion digits of pi have been calculated and a Japanese guy has memorized 60,000. A good way to keep busy I guess.

Using a simpel method you can derive pi without the complex knowledge of geomatery: Write a computer program which draws a circle in a square. then fire "bullets" at this diagram. The ratio of bullets that hit the circle and those that hit both the circle and the square, is the number pi. The mentods seems to generate pi to an amazingly precise precision.

Cool

better get on with my refree report which has been stagnant for the past week and a half! Must finsih!

Foray into Islam and polygamy

An amazingly energetic and interestig lecture from Mrs Shaheen Ali today. The woman is amazing with her loud-speaker voice, taking into account her jet lag and blood shot tired eyes. As i know nothing about islamic law i think the lecture served as a good intro on the topics of polygamy and talaq ( divorce). The misconception, or rather I say the (mis)interpertation of Quran on the subject of pologomy is a topic worth shedding some light on. The Quran, the word from the devine deity, revealed to Prophet Muhamad (sullah ho wali wasalam) over a period of 23 years, was an evolving response to the questions posed by the followers at the time. So the revelations in the Quaran apply to the context that it originally adressed as well as providing a guideline for the believers after the passing of the prophet.

{a bit of distraction from flat mates}

back to my rant.....

The word of Quran is open to interpertation, everyone has their worn school of thought and way of thinking and views the world and its treasures from a different set of mind and a different pair of eyes then me and you. The verses in the Quran regarding polygomy were revealed after the battle of Uhud. The Battle of Uhud was fought between the small community of the first converts of Islam in Median and the forces of Mecca. The Muslims had the worst encounters and lost some 70 of strong men. Given the size of the Muslim community at that time this presented a huge loss and left a great number of women widowed with orphans. These woman came to the Prophet and explained their situation that they were left with no bread winner for the family, noone for protection and to take care of them. Then came the revelation which instructed the men ,left in the community, to take care of these widows and orphans as one takes care of their neighbours. This task became taxing and then came another revelation, in order to solve the social problem, which said that a married men is allowed to take a second wife given that he is able to treat both wives just.

"If ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly with the orphans, marry women of your choice, Two or three or four; but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one, or (a captive) that your right hands possess, that will be more suitable, to prevent you from doing injustice."

Now, this revelation is open several interpertation:

  1. Are men only allowed to marry a windowed woman?

  2. How do you interpert "just" is it measured in material sense for example if one wife has 3 shawls the man must provide the other with 3 shawls. If the first lives in a 2 bedroom appartment, should the man also provide the second wife with the smae. Or should the man be equitable in the more moral sense of the word?

  3. How do you judge wether the man is being just between the two women?

  4. Who judges wether the man is being is being fair to both wives?

  5. ......

After the revelation came another one which said that you can never do justice between the two wives.

"Ye are never able to be fair and just as between women, even if it is your ardent desire"

So even on one hand the Quran is saying a man can take a second wife given that he can treat them both fairly and equally, on the other hand it says that it is not possible ( given the human nature) for the man to be fully just. So what meaning can we derive from the two revelations. Over the years the Muslims have conveniently followed the revelations which suits them best and suits theire desires and needs, while ignoring those which dont suit them. This has led to the a common practice of polygamy in most Islamic nations. Polygamy is not encouraged in the Quran, nor Allah had allowed it. He was clearly careful to highly discourage polygamy to men by telling them "but if ye fear that ye shall not be able to deal justly (with them), then only one...(4:3)" which clearly orders men to either be fair or to not marry at all.

Turkey and Tunisia are the only two Muslim nations which have banned polygamy. Whereas other countries like Pakitan and Morroco have passed laws which allow polygamy under predefined conditions. And convinently no one follows these laws and with the governemnt ,its policies, the economy and the whole social structure in shambels, there is no one incharge who can hold the law brokers accountable. In my view polygamy should be banned, becasue it does nothing more, then bring in an increasing number of starving and illitrate kids in the poor islamic nations. Poor men practicing polygamy don't provide fairness to the newly born kids and to the economically crippled society, and certainly not to their wives either.

Apart from the poor straving kids and social unjustice, the practice of polygamy is posing another issue, especially in the Dutch Muslim society. Men marry several wives for sexual gratification and then abandom them. The abandonment is simplier than ever imagined. Non- Muslim nations do not recognise the "nikkah" which the the islamic way of marriage. Therefore the man can pronounce the marriage null anytime and will not be held legally accountable because the legal system does not consider the Nikkah as a marriage. On the top of the Nikkah one is suppose to have a registered marriage in the city hall, but again due to the unawareness of the issues women simply have a Nikkah which provides the man with the opportuntiy to indulge in the ecstacy of the new marriage and the new woman, and when the infatuation is over he can leave witout any legal binding.

The solution to this problem is to create awareness and not only to educate the muslim woman of their rights but also to educate the men regarding the true teachings of Islam. These men have cemented ideas passed on to them from generations to generations which mis interprust the Quran and makes it acceptable for them to have more then one wife. Some societies even attach higher value to having more then one wife, it is considered more of as a status symbol. The only way to lift the shadows of darkness from the muslim society is to create awareness.....

"Its a riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma"

Yes i finally have a thesis topic!!! wohoooo. kinda stumbeled on it but i am happy with it. ( atleast so far). crossing my fingers and hoping that the internship ppl will also approve of the idea. talking about fingures, just watched a movie called 5 fingers. i think it was pretty good and twisted.

Its about this Dutch "network" which wants to destroy the world and the larg corps like Mcdonalds, Heliburton etc to bring justice to the world so no more riches and poors, no more hungry and satisfied. Well one of the members from the network goes to morocco to carry out his mission of obtaining a deadly bacteria to poision the Big Macs etc....... movie is interesting caus you dont know till the end who his captors are and what are their motives. Also the chopping of the fingers part is a bit raw! reminds me of the Misery novel by Stephen King. I think that is one of the best book i have read so far. the imagery, the twisted thinking of psycho Ainne. I really wanted to watchthe movie and I have been waiting for it to finish it download, but gess what it turned out to be in French!

Well I know zero french so that was useless.

So far....

Just a quick update

  • a bit disappointed about not winning the photo competition. thought the white erasmus milk chocolate looks delicious. I am amazed how many cool photos there were as well as the fact that how so many ppl didnt really know what the exact guidelines etc were. Anyway I am quite happy when the judges said that if they had to chose a third place "winner" one of my photos would have been chosen.

  • Really getting sick and tired of doing Warwick assignemnts, expeically knowing that they dont help me with my grade average at all! very demotivating.

  • Thesis is not goign anywhere really have to get a move on with that.

  • some other highlights involve:

  1. biking alll the way to leiden and back!! wohooooooooooooooooo so the lost of the fridge had somethings crossed out including running in the morning. Making slow progress

  2. opening up a new bar with my flatemates mum! ehum how cool is that?

  3. finally being "one of them" bought shoes that are actually in fashion now a days

  4. some strange and extremely possititve developments in a friends life! shes "loosing" her identity. lets say she is trying to (re) figure herself out at the moment

  5. A man was actually forced to marry a GOAT in sudan! surprising things happen every day: http://news.bbc.co.uk/go/em/fr/-/2/hi/africa/4748292.stm

looking forward to everything and anything! feel too lazy...which is not good.

This marks the begining of a new interest. First it was Art, for a longggg period of time, then one summer day I got the idea of photography and now a blog. Well the main motivation behind starting the blog doesnt not involve "killing time" I am ofcourse a "busy person" ( lol) and I defiately have a lot of other thing to do tonight

- finish editing this picture ( its a bpicture of a banana peel)
- finish reading the edititng tutorial I started around 3 hours ago. Its not even that long, I just starteddoing zillion different things in the mean time and forgot I was actually reading that. DISTRACTIONS!
- actually get a move on with the multivariate assigemnt

I am already addicted to 4 websit, namely: SXC, Facebook, Kitco and Hotmail, not a day goes by when i dont check these frequently. To use the word 'frequently' would be an understatement!. So the last thing I want is to extend my list of "frequently used websites". But here I am , just wanted to try somethign new, and I give in to peer pressure quite easily (most of the time). So as some of my friends have their blogs, I said why not give 'blogging" a try.

I am getting so sick and tired of having to make choices. why cant we just have once choice. Hmm wait a second then that wont be called a "choice" anymore. Anway when starting up the blog I had to choose the layout of my blog, and being a picky person I actuly clicked on "preview" on all of them to see that they looked like. It is really really irritating when you click on a link and the mesage appears saying " Page cannot be found". Anywy I ended up chosing the simple looking setting.

And now I am goona hit the "Publish" button, I hope this work and actually publish My First ever post" and not just display a page saying " Page cannot be found" and i loose eveyrhting I wrote!

Just as a contingency plan I am goona copy what i wrote :) heheheh
